I did not know that
dogs ate fish.
Cats are famous for liking fish. Cats are also famous for not liking water. The question therefore is how, pre-domestication, did cats come across their fishy feasts to develop such a taste?
Pleasant little list on half a sheet of ruled A5 paper. A clear hand with some essentials. Interesting that there is a ‘big yog’ and ‘yog’. I am not sure what ‘Red On’ is, or Keiti.
I am not sure what Keiti is, will it be
this? Maybe I am reading the word incorrectly. Could it be Keith?
Morrisons, Reading, UK, December 2022
A vintage list from 7 years ago. A deceptively large shopping list as there are multiple items on each line.
This shopper has planned their menu for the next week with, for example, gammon and squares(?) on Thursday. It looks like Saturday night may have been a night out!
Found Sainsbury’s, Calcot, Reading

Predominately non food items. Of the 3 items which are edible, it is unusual to see gum on a shopping list.
After sun speaks to warm weather or a holiday.
Jammy Dodgers are sandwiched biscuits with a sugary red jammy goo exposed in a heart shape.
A5, spiral bound, in pencil.
Sainsbury’s, Reading, 5th July 2022
Some people, instead of using a simple dot above the Latin letters i and j, use full blown circles. The owner of this list was one of those people.
Did you know, this tiny, little superscript dot has a name? It is called a tittle.
The tittle on milk is nearly a heart. The tittles on high juice are just the start of circles. The tittles on Pinot Grigio are more fully formed. The tittle on veggie burgers is an ambitious galaxy of a swirl.

A4 Lined, spiral bound, folded. Black biro.
A short list of items, maybe somebody planning a barbecue for Saturday. They need fire lighters and ‘lighter long. Maybe this is long matches or an actual
Speculating, they needs rolls for sausages and burgers and maybe a salad to go with it.
Cake for afterwards.
Sainsbury’s, Reading, 9th July 2022
A5 spiral bound shopping list, lined, blue biro. Later addition of weedkiller in a black pen. A pen that was reluctant to work.
Shloer is a non alcoholic grape juice available in red, white or rosé.
Lidl, Reading, UK, June 2022
Lovely red pen on a plain piece of paper makes this list stand out from the crowd.
Not a major shop but rather a few required items. It looks like lasagne and salad was on the menu. Some fruit is listed and also shower gel.
Lidl, Chard, 8th August 2021
A top up list of a few items. Written on a torn piece of note paper with fashionable rounded corners.
Aldi 8th June 2017
A small top up shop written on the back of an envelope. I am surmising that Moz is mozzarella.
I wonder if squash is the soft drink or the vegetable.
Found April 2017, Reading, U.K.
This is the first list on
www.theshoppinglists.com from the United States. Woo!
The list was very kindly donated by Rockie from Portland, Oregan. My guess is that this is a top up shop rather than a large weekly visit. Items on the menu for the next couple of days could include a salad with lettuce, cucumber? Maybe some Mexican food with the rice, beans and salsa and bagels with cream cheese for lunch?
I had never heard of Mr Stubbs and his BBQ sauce before so here is more info for those who are interested:
“This is the real deal, the original. And its tangy tomato, vinegar, molasses and black pepper are gonna treat you right.”
Rockie has great handwriting but in case you need help making it out, the items are:
Salad, Olive Oil, Dish soap, Potatoes, Bread, Peanut Butter, Bagels / Cheese, Lettuce, Doritos, Rice, Beans, Salsa, Lunch Meat, Carrots, Cucumber, Mr Stubbs BBQ
The food was purchased from Fred Meyer here
Any questions and comments are welcome!
